Hello everyone! 2021 is here and I am finally sharing with you this exciting project: a unique illustrated map of Yogyakarta (also known as Yogya), my favourite city in the Indonesian archipelago. I fell in love with this capital of traditional crafts and rich cultural heritage, so it was an incredible opportunity to create it on paper for popmydayaroundtheworld. They make unique city guides in collaboration with locals who give you their best and coolest addresses to make it a one in a lifetime experience. I am full of hope that 2021 will bring us to new places.

As for the map’s packaging, I decided to go for an illustration of a gamelan concert. Gamelan… I have been bewitched by it. And I bet you would be too. Hearing gamelan is one thing, standing in front of a whole orchestra of gamelan players, all dressed beautifully with hats and sarong, playing on their red and gold instruments is another thing. There were enormous gongs, instruments that looked like xylophones and drums, and other gold devices I never saw before. It felt like one instrument was playing but I could see dozens of people carefully playing. It instantly calmed me, brought me peace and felt very deep. It was an intense experience for me, and I’d love you to discover it too!

I cannot wait to hold the final map in my hands. This will be one of the biggest projects I have worked on so far. I will keep you posted once it’s printed.

Getting inspired for Christmas

Hi there! December is here already and I was very lucky to get snow on the first day of the month, here in Wiesbaden. This definitely helped me to get in the festive mood!

Living in Asia for so long meant no winter, no snow, no chimney fire, no kitted sweater, no warm socks, no hot chocolate… you got the idea. Every December, I struggled to get my creativity and Christmas spirit on. As a watercolor artist and illustrator, this can be very frustrating. I was looking desperately at my Pinterest or Instagram feed with incredible photos of cities covered in snow, families getting ready for Christmas decorating their houses, or people just looking out the window with a hot chocolate. So this year, as I am spending my first winter in Europe, I decided to challenge myself: I would (try) to make a Christmas inspired pattern every day of the month. Firstly, it would help me to put into practice the training I got earlier this year with Bonnie Christine. Secondly, it would push me to draw or paint a little bit everyday. And thirdly, I was in the perfect environment to get inspired.

My only limitation for this challenge was to be Christmas themed. This is a very personal approach as some things I judge Christmasy might not be for some of you, as you may live in an area where snow is there most of the year, or live in a little wooden house. I could use any medium (watercolor, digital illustration) and any colour (Christmas traditional red and greens are not my favorites, as you will see).

Thank you for being here and taking the time to read me. Here is a little bit of my story.

I was the kind of kid drawing all the time, asking Paint by numbers for birthdays, spending hours at art shops and begging my mom to buy me new pencils or brushes. My parents have been very supportive and had me attend art classes, drawing lessons and any creative activity I wanted. Now being an adult, I realize the money spent in arts and crafts for a kid’s hobby…  Fast forward a few years, I’m in high school and applying to famous art schools in Paris. My parents were not naïve and told me to apply to university as a back up plan. Good thing they did as I wasn’t selected and ended up to study advertising and marketing, which I loved!

Now, where I am standing today, I think there was a good reason for it. I have a Communication & Adverting diploma and Marketing & Business Bachelor from France and the UK (where I met my husband).  Those led me to a Marketing and Business Development career in Asia, where I spent 7 years working for established companies and startups. I have learnt a great deal about organization, office life, team management and above all entrepreneurship. I was working my butt off, coming home late at night and still waking up early on weekends to get some time to draw and paint. I was picturing drawings, shapes, colors or motifs while commuting, on my lunch break or in the shower. My brain couldn’t switch off. At the birth of my daughter, I decided to leave my job which was way too intense and take care of her and give this creative career a try. Shortly after, covid happened and my husband got an opportunity in Germany.

And here I am in Wiesbaden, with my plan to become a part-time freelance illustrator. Because yes, I am looking for a job here, I love marketing and project management too much to let it go entirely. Ideally, I’d have my little illustration business to take care on evenings and weekends. So while job hunting, I have trained for surface pattern design, Illustrator, vectors, color theory and much more to be able to apply all my ideas. Watercolor is and will always be my favorite medium, but this is so great that technology is helping me to apply it for different applications from stationery to wallpaper or textiles!
